COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) - A sprawling piece of private forest on Lake Coeur d'Alene's eastern shore will be forever off-limits to development.

Jean Maucieri, whose parents built a cabin on land along the east shore of the north Idaho lake nearly 100 years ago, recently put the land under a conservation easement.

The legally-binding deal will protect about 500 acres from development and protect its timber and wildlife values for future generations.

Maucieri tells the Spokesman-Review the family didn't want the property carved into five-acre lots for homes.

The land south of Harrison borders more than a mile of the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes and features mature pine and fir forests that overlook two lake bays.

Maucieri's father, Bert Selby, acquired the initial tract in 1910 as part of a lottery dividing up land on the Coeur d'Alene Indian reservation.
