Canyon Co. Legislators Push New Bill Aimed at Illegal Immigration

Boise, Idaho -- The Idaho State Legislature is considering new legislation that would crack down on illegal immigrants looking to work in the Gem State.

But the bill doesn't just go after the illegal's, but also those they work for.

"If they knowingly hire someone who is not in this country legally -- knowingly, which is a high standard. But if they knowingly hire someone, that also would be against the law as well," Sen. John McGee.

Senate Bill 1271 makes it illegal to produce false identification when applying for a job, enhances the penalties and makes it specific in law.

Senator Patti Anne Lodge believes taxpayers shouldn't have to foot the bill of those who are not in the state legally.

"If they're not hired, then their children won't be in our education systems. And they will not be in our social service systems, which will decrease costs for the citizens of the State of Idaho," said Lodge.

As it stands now, the bill is up for debate with the Legislature. However, the final decision will extend beyond the steps of the Statehouse, it's about jobs. And it comes at a time when that is the first and foremost thought of many Idahoans.

"In a time where we have 12 percent unemployment in Canyon County and 10 percent unemployment across the state, I mean, we're trying to make sure that Idaho jobs are going to Idahoans," McGee said.

McGee said this isn't about targeting any specific ethnic group or part of society other than those who try to work in Idaho without the proper credentials and punish employers who choose to knowingly look the other way.
