Wyo. regional forester rejects big box store ban

Associated Press - March 3, 2010 12:04 PM ET

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) - Regional Forester Harv Forsgren has rejected a proposal from a conservation group that would have prevented construction of a large store on federal land near Jackson.

U.S. Forest Service officials began working on a plan to sell agency property in Jackson years ago as a way to cover the cost of replacing the aging Bridger-Teton National Forest headquarters building. The Jackson Hole Conservation Alliance wanted the federal agency to sell an easement that would limit the size of future commercial development on the site in an effort to keep big box stores from building there.

But in a letter to the group, Forsgren rejected the idea, saying the future development of the land is a matter for the city of Jackson to decide, not the Forest Service.
