Idaho Soldier Remembered

Boise, ID - Private First Class Raymond Mitchell Werner was one of three Idaho soldiers killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq on February 8th, 2006.  He was only 21-years-old.

"Raymond Mitchell Werner will be missed by all, but a part of him will live forever in our hearts," said Ken Whitmore, who delivered the eulogy.

Friday morning at the Cloverdale Church of God, his family and friends were forced to say their untimely goodbyes.

"He has taught me to not take one single minute with my family for granted," said Whitmore, "He has taught me the true cost of war."

Werner joined the U.S. Army in August of 2005.  In September he deployed to Iraq with the 321st Engineer Battalion, leaving behind his wife of three months, Lacy.

"He actually proposed to me in a Walmart parking lot," said Lacy Werner, "We hadn't even started dating yet, then couple months later we decided maybe we should start dating first."

Lacy says his two main goals in life were to be a good husband, and someday a good father.  She says he accomplished one of those goals, and would have had no problem conquering the other.

"Every single day I told him he was doing good and that he was special, and he always made me feel special all he would say back is no Lacy I am proud of you," said Werner.

But Lacy wasn't the only person who was proud of Ray, his family and friends regard him as a hero and say he was dedicated to his family and the Lord.

'Ray is in a better place and I promise you this, if Ray had the option of coming back, not in a million years would he return because where Ray is is better than any place we can imagine or possible dream up," said Pastor Chris Standridge.
