Anonymous Email Services Help Those Online Hide Their Identity

Stephen Donald Newman, the man arrested this weekend in an Eagle Park with a knife, was using a secure e-mail account through Anonymousspeech.com.

The website allows users to send anonymous e-mails, making them difficult to track down. It operates outside the Untied States and European legal systems and is based out of Japan.

The company also doesn't store personal information and customers can delete any trace of their account.

"Folks need to be aware that there is this new emerging technology out there and, just because we're accustomed to caller ID or just because we feel safe when we recognize an email address or it seems familiar, doesn't guarantee that we know who is behind that," said Nora Carpenter.

The Better Business Bureau has become aware of several of these new anonymous services that allow users to hide their true identity.

According to Nampa Police, anonymous e-mails based overseas are incredibly hard to track down.
