Safe Haven Program Averaging Two Babies a Year

Boise Idaho -- Idaho is averaging about two babies a year into its Safe Haven program.

Since its inception in 2001, 13 women in the Gem state have taken their babies to a safe haven.

That's where the mother of a newborn can leave her child at a hospital, doctor's office, clinic, or other medical office so the baby can then be put up for adoption.

The law offers a legal option for teenage girls who are facing a pregnancy crisis.

"She may not be able to make clear good decisions, sometimes babies will end up in a dumpster, and that's one thing we don't want. We don't poor decision by someone very young," said Idaho Department of Health and Welfare Spokesman Tom Shanahan.

After confirming the infant's health, the Department of Health and Welfare will then place the baby into an adoptive home.

Information about both mother and child remains confidential.
