Boise, Idaho -- Treasure Valley firefighters had a busy day with two house fires, including one with a brave rescue and the other with a sad ending.
The first one took place in Boise at 12:20 p.m. on North 28th Street. When crews arrived, the flames had completely engulfed the carport and were spreading rapidly toward the home. Firefighters called in additional crews to assist.
The two people inside were able to escape, but their dog and cat were still inside. Since fire compromised the back staircase crews had to use a ladder to get into a second story window and rescue the pets.
"Obviously, humans are the highest priority of life, but animals are very important to all of us too and they're a higher priority than property," said Dave Hanneman, Deputy Chief-Fire Marshal.
"She looked at her house and she told me I don't care about the house I'm just glad everybody is okay and I got my cat and my dog back," said firefighter Randy Christensen.
The biggest issue for animals is smoke inhalation, so the pets were taken to a local vet for a check-up. They will both be fine, thanks to the quick work of firefighters and specialized equipment that provides oxygen to animals. The cause of the fire is still undetermined.
The second house fire Tuesday happened on a busy thoroughfare during rush hour.
It started just before 6 p.m. on Franklin between Eagle Road and Locust Grove. The two-alarm fire was contained to the bottom floor of the home although it did heavy damage to the kitchen and living room areas.
The residents of the home made it out safely, however their dog did not. Investigators have not determined the cause.
