Boise, Idaho -- A Boise couple is dealing with an unusual problem -- they've discovered mold within their mattress.
Consumers should check your mattress if you have a Sleep Number bed from Sleep Comfort. As the Waymires learned, it was the last place they thought they would find mold.
When Gary and Julie Waymire pulled back the covers and bed pads Wednesday morning, it was a nightmare.
They discovered they have mold growing in their $3,000 bed.
"It's way down, you know; yes, I'm concerned," said Julie.
The Waymires have owned this Sleep Number bed by Sleep Comfort for nearly six years, but just now are discovered the contamination when a family member in Portland convinced them to check their bedding.
They found mold in their Sleep Number as well, making it a least two reports of the problem in that area.
"I myself know about five to six people who have this bed and if we have a problem, undoubtedly they will too," said Julie.
Gary says he called Sleep Comfort, which agreed to overnight a replacement.
They also instructed him to keep the bed covered until the new one arrives, then wrap up the molded mattresses and foam pads and dispose of them.
Gary claims the company also told him it has known of the problem since around 1996 when other complaints were filed.
"Why didn't they notify people this was a potential problem and people should check their beds and see if they're bad or not?" asked Gary.
Health experts says mold can happen in any mattress if the conditions are right, and our bodies extract moisture and humidity when we're sleeping and if maintained in an area, you can get mold.
The Waymires believe that's how they fell victim to the unhealthy black mold.
"Knowing about mold and what they do to homes sometimes, it's not a good thought," said Gary.
Gary and Julie bought the bed to relax with its separate firmness control, and will, for now, anxiously await the replacement.
"They said they treated it with something so the new ones won't mold," said Gary.
We tried contacting Sleep Comfort's corporate office for comment, but our call was not returned.
