Car Crash Damages Gas Line

Boise, Idaho -- A young driver caused an entire city block to be shut down Sunday afternoon in downtown Boise.

Brian Panzella, 16, crashed into a two-inch gas line at the Metro Car Wash near Front and 13th Streets. The fire department and police were immediately called in to shut off the gas.

13th Street was blocked off and Intermountain Gas was brought in to make sure crews had stopped the leak.

"We'd just pulled out of the car wash and my mom told me to put it in drive instead of neutral. I kept my foot on the break the whole time and, as soon as I put it in drive, the car just took off. I had no idea what happened. I tried to avoid going into the street so I made a hard left and ran right into the gas line," said Panzella.

"Once we got here and found out that we could turn the gas off it took us about minute and a half, two minutes," said Ken Tavernier, a Boise firefighter.

No injuries or other damage were reported at the scene.

As for the driver, he was planning on taking his driver's license test in a few weeks.
