Idahoan Fighting for Heavyweight Title

Posted:

Nampa, Idaho -- An Idaho man is looking to make it big this weekend as one of the best mixed martial artists around.

Nampa's Justin Eilers will be fighting for a shot at a heavyweight title in the Elite XC and perhaps even a chance to bring more opportunities to Idaho fighters.

"This is a huge fight, this is a title fight," explained Eilers, after a recent workout at Rocky Mountain Fitness in Eagle.

The fight he referred to could definitely take him to the next level in the world of mixed martial arts.

Eilers already experienced a short-lived career in the Ultimate Fighting Championships, now he's looking for a more lucrative home and he's hoping Elite XC is the place to do it. But first he has to beat, or at least have a good showing against the current champ, Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.

"He's a heavy weight, he's a big heavy weight. He fights like a big heavy weight. He throws big powerful stuff, but he doesn't throw fast speed, so I'm going to wear him down and take my time and get him in later rounds," said Eilers.

And he believes he can do it. He says he's never been in better shape, and hopefully his workouts prove it.

Every afternoon is dedicated to aerobic exercise and weight lifting -- at night he spars at Combat Fitness, but despite his physical prowess, the man can be knocked out.

Most recently was two years ago during UFC 57 by Branden Vera, but according to Eilers, that was one of the fleeting exceptions to the rule.

"In 27 fights, I've only been knocked out twice. So it's not like I get knocked out," he explained.

And getting knocked out this time is not acceptable.

In fact this is not only his time to shine, according to trainer Nate Pettit it's also a chance for other Idaho fighters to get some attention.

"We want guys like that in Idaho training in Idaho it brings credibility to our gyms and the other gyms and getting them in the pro circuit and making a good name for Idaho," said Pettit.

And in the world of mixed martial arts Idaho claims some great fighters, now they just need an opportunity.

"Hopefully guys will follow in my footsteps and also get on TV and represent the state as well," said Eilers.

If all goes as planned, Eilers will not only represent Idaho well, he's also planning to bring home the Elite XC heavyweight belt, saying he'll knocking out Antonio Silva in the third round.

"I'm in great shape and I'm ready to go and I'm going to bring this title home to Idaho," Eilers said.

Incidentally, there is about a 30 pound weight difference in this fight, which favors Antonio Silva.

The Elite XC event is scheduled for Saturday, July 26.

It will air on CBS and Showtime.
