Egg and Sperm Donation Up Due to Poor Economy

Meridian, Idaho -- The number of women volunteering to donate their eggs has doubled recently across the U.S.  

At Nationwide Egg Donation in Meridian, they're getting at least 50 calls and emails a week from people who are interested in joining their service..

"Well, we've had a huge influx in people wanting to be donors. One because they're looking for alternative income to their situations. We have a lot of single moms or students that want to pay for college," explained Tiffany Valentine, the company's president.

The selected women can make $5,000 for their first donation and up to $10,000 each time after that.

At Sperm Donors Incorporated, they're also swamped with men who want to join the ranks of the company's male models, athletes and average joes who make $1,000 each time they donate.

There is a catch though, male or female, not everyone is accepted.

"The intended parents are basically looking for genetics. They want someone in good physical condition, someone who is very bright, someone that has a great personality," said Kevin Foster, the company's president.

Asia Anderson has a nearly flawless genetic background and has gone through the process four different times.

"I would say it's extremely rewarding. I think it's such an awesome thing to do if they are in the position to do it," she tells other women.

But she warns helping create a child is big decision that has to be based on more than money

"I think that being the sole reason why then no. I think that it's a personal sacrifice. I think it can be a sacrifice for them and their family," said Anderson.

Both companies want to encourage even more people to apply. They're excited to be able to give clients as much choice as possible when traditional conception isn't a option.

"It's very fulfilling to help them make their dreams come true," said Foster.

"It's like what better gift for a woman to give to another woman. It's priceless," agrees Valentine.

Would be egg donors have to answer a long questionnaire and under go mental and physical screenings. Plus all donors must submit a picture.
