Homeowners Upset Over Alleged Asbestos

Posted:

Boise, Idaho -- The people who live in an East Boise mobile home park say asbestos is buried in where children play.

They say for that matter it's right where everyone lives. Homeowners say they're so upset because the owners of the park aren't' doing anything about it.

Fox 12 News was not able to independently verify the material is asbestos, but they say they have proof that pipes made of asbestos material are buried right under a gazebo.

Christine Brown is very angry and says nobody's willing to do anything about it. Brown and a few other residents of the Blue Valley Park in East Boise say there used to be asbestos pipes under their community "lake". Toxic pipes that they say, were dug up, and simply covered up.

"So, rather than dispose of it properly, a lot of it was just back graded and buried there," said Dan Sanford, a homeowner in the park.

Homeowners showed us a chunk of the pipe from the community lake they say contains asbestos.

"Particles will break down cause lung disease, cancer. We may not know the cause of that for decades to come," said Sanford.

While we have not verified the material is in fact asbestos, but if it is, Sanford can already imagine the danger.

"So, envision your 3-, 4-, 5-year-old grandchild out there, with a shovel and a bucket, out by the gazebo and digging up pieces of asbestos and breathing it in," said Sanford.

"This is where they want our children to play. Kids, little kids, are being exposed to asbestos, every time they go down there. We all know asbestos can cause cancer," said Christine Brown, a homeowner at Blue Valley Mobile Home Park.

She says the owners know about the potential danger, but aren't willing to do anything about it.

"The cost. It costs a lot of money, first of all. Second, it's a headache!" said Brown.

Brown says there's a simple solution.

"I want it removed, I want it out of here, I want this to be a safe place for children," said Brown.

Fox 12 called the managers of the park, but they said they do not want to comment.
