Boise, Idaho -- The Salvation Army is being sued by a former chief fundraiser.
Rick Hempsmyer alleges that the charity misused funds raised through grants and direct mail appeals. The money was supposed to fund programs, like food for the hungry and child summer camps.
Instead he says some of the cash went for church purposes and general operating expenses, reasons other than what donors though their money was going toward. He contends he was fired for blowing the whistle on the issue.
The matter went before the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division, but it doesn't rule these matters and closed the file.
The charity's lawyer says the organization can't comment on the ongoing litigation.
