Jury convicts 2 for destroying historic mine

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - A federal jury has convicted two people from Bellevue for destroying an ore bin and other property at a historic mine in central Idaho.

But the jury also acquitted 37-year-old Russell Nuxoll, and 51-year-old Janet Sylten of stealing government property after a 2-day trial.

Nuxoll and Sylten were indicted last fall and accused of looting the Snoose Mine, located two miles west of Hailey and listed as an official archaeological site in 2002. They were accused of destroying the mine's headframe and ore bin, both constructed before World War II.

During the trial, defense attorneys argued Nuxoll and Sylten held a valid mining claim at the site, and were cleaning up a mess someone else caused

Sentencing is scheduled for June 1. They face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
