BSU Football Assistant Coach Bob Gregory Getting Used to New Role

Boise, Idaho -- Boise State Assistant Coach Bob Gregory is getting re-acquainted and stepping into his new role.

Gregory comes to Bronco Nation football by taking a step down in position as the defensive coordinator at California. That may seem like an odd move, but he has a pretty good reason why.

We're only a month away from the annual spring game on the Blue and that's about as much time as Gregory has spent back in Boise. This isn't his first stint coaching with the Broncos -- he was here for the 2001 season.

"It's a lot different than it was eight years ago. The talent is much better, no offense to those guys. But I'm excited to work with these guys. It's a good group," said Gregory.

It should come as no surprise Gregory feels that way, after all, the Broncos are expected to be a major player again at the national level. But he said that's why he decided to step down as the main defensive play-caller at California to be an assistant on the defense at Boise State.

He doesn't have to speak too loud to catch the attention of players either. You could say his experience allows him to walk softly and carry a big stick.

"It seems that way so far, here. I don't know if it's because he's new that he's not really yelling a whole lot, and things like that. I think it's more his style. That's the way it is. When he has something to say, it's important. And he's not gonna go say a bunch of things that people don't really need to listen to," said senior defensive end Ryan Winterswyk.

"He holds guys accountable, and he does it in his way. He's not a big yeller or screamer, but he's a great teacher. He just holds the guys to the grindstone as far as how we want it done," said defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.

But just because he doesn't have to yell to earn respect on the field, don't mistake his calm demeanor. He's jacked to be here.

"This is one of the premiere programs. I mean all you've got do is turn on the TV Thursday or Friday nights and you're going to watch Boise State play, and they're beating everyone in the country. It's very exciting to be a part of something like that," said Gregory.

"One thing I've noticed, he brings a lot of energy. He fires guys up on the field, you know. He gets guys going. That's always good for the explosive type of defense we have," said junior defensive lineman Billy Winn.

Gregory brings a wealth of coaching experience. The BSU coaching staff, as well as the players, seem to be excited to have someone with his level of expertise to help guide the Broncos in their quest for a national championship run next season and beyond.
