S. Idaho officials face growing inmate population

Associated Press - July 11, 2010 2:24 PM ET

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) - Officials in Twin Falls County say they are concerned the inmate population at the county jail will soon outgrow the current facility and lead to expensive options or overcrowding lawsuits.

Sheriff Tom Carter and Capt. Doug Hughes predict that in 2012 the Twin Falls County Jail in south-central Idaho will have a shortage of secure beds.

Carter tells The Times-News he was hoping to be able to lease beds at a proposed new facility in Jerome County, but that project fell 21 votes short of the needed 66.7% supermajority voter approval in November.

Twin Falls County currently houses most excess inmates at other counties at a cost of about $50 to $60 per day.
