Bogus Basin Closes In Style

Bogus Basin -- Skiers and snowboarders were out in full force Sunday afternoon at Bogus Basin, although perhaps not in full dress.

Patrons of the mountain took full advantage of the sunny weather and celebrated the final day of the season. There was a lot of glare at Bogus, but it wasn't necessarily the snow as skiers and snowboarders donned shorts and swimsuits as they enjoyed the beach-themed good-bye party.

"And there are all sorts of costumes and scantily clad people. It's all about bringing the beach to the mountain and celebrating," said Bogus Basin spokeswoman Gretchen Anderson.

Hundreds of people flocked to Bogus Basin to partake in a final hooray of sorts with dancing, barbeques, and, of course, some skiing.

"We all woke up early and got set up in the parking lot with our picnics and started skiing right away when it opened," said season pass holder Jessica Robinson.

The beach-themed party was in celebration of a very successful season for Bogus Basin thanks to the record amount of snows, cold weather, and increased guest counts.

"It's been the best season I can remember," said Robinson.

The weather will turn chilly again before we are officially into summer, but Bogus is closing because seasonal workers are off to their spring and summer jobs and the upkeep costs outweigh their profit margin.

"One is that our skier visits drop off and it doesn't make sense for us to run the area when it costs more to run it than we're bringing in," said Anderson.

Although the mountain has struggled financially in the past, they far surpassed their aggressive budget planned for the 2007/2008 season. But don't expect any large updates at the resort just yet.

"Will it translate into any big improvements on the mountain? Not quite yet cause we still have a lot of debt," said Anderson.

If you just can't say good-bye to ski season quite yet, Brundage and Sun Valley skiing are still open. Season ticket holders with Bogus will get discounted prices at either mountain.
