Boise, Idaho-- M2E Power is developing a mobile cell phone charger that actually captures energy as you walk.
"So you can be moving around have it clipped to your purse, backpack or belt and it's just going to slowly gather the energy from movement and translate it into a battery," said Regan Rowe, the director of business development.
"Basically what we've done and we've put a charger inside of the battery so it will charge the battery as it moves," said Eric Yarger, the inventor of M2E Charger.
It's on the go, wireless energy.
The base for the science originally came out of the Idaho National Laboratory.
They were attempting to meet the needs of the military, because soldiers in the field go through a lot of batteries, and running out can be dangerous.
"And so with M2E as they're out in the battlefield they can charged their electronic devices and stay safe and not have so much weigh their back packs," said Rowe.
Now the INL inventor who started it all, Eric Yarger, has teamed up with M2E to get his device from proto type to reality.
"I think I'm more excited because it will help the consumer and it will help the common person," said Yarger.
The company hopes to have the mobile charger available by next year.
From there they plan to continue their research and scale it down, so that one day it will be inside all cell phones.
But M2E is more than just a mobile battery.
"It's a technology platform. so it means we can apply this innovation in wind power. It can be applied in ocean waves. It can actually help extend the range of hybrid and electric vehicles," said Rowe.
With discoveries like this one occuring at INL, M2E and other businesses, the Gem State is starting to be recognized nationally for it's green innovation and technical capabilities.
"And, we're hoping that M2E and other clean tech companies, together we'll build a clean tech corridor and create a lot of green collar jobs in Idaho," said Rowe.
M2E is looking for more top engineers to join their team.
The company is also in talks with some of the major manufactures and distributors of mobile phone accessories and mp3 players.
