Decorator Makes Over Valley Crisis Center

Nampa Idaho -- A local decorator is helping make it an especially happy holiday at the Valley Crisis Center in Nampa.

Jim Meadows, with Home Enhancement Company, is donating his decorating skills to take the center from simple, to stunning.

There is one room set aside at the facility where battered women can take time out and unwind.

But, it has one big problem. Its donated furniture and cold white walls don't exactly scream "relaxing, safe haven."

"I know the feeling that I had when I came in here and I never tried to share that with the women just because. It was kind of depressing to me to be in here," said Charlene Wright, the program services director.

That why Meadows, also known as Fox 12's Mr. Makeover, knew this was the room that needed his Cinderella treatment.

"And, knowing that there is going to be several women and several families that for years can enjoy this space really makes it cool," said Meadows.

The first thing he did to take the room from shabby to chic was to liven up the walls with some green paint, that's green in more ways than one.

"It's basically environmentally safe. There's no VOC's. There's really no smell to it," Meadows explained.

To make the small space seem a bit bigger and more inviting, Meadows added three mirrored panels and some modern art.

"And, with the colors we had with the sage green we kind of needed some darker metals to make it feel really warm," said Meadows.

Then it was finally time to shine up a brand new leather couch and some comfy chairs for the women to kick back on.

All the work was done in just a day, and by 4 p.m., the room was ready for it's big reveal.

"Oh my gosh. OK you guys. I never would have believed this could happen in this room. This is beautiful," said Wright.

The workers say Mr. Makeover's generous gift has given their residents a place to heal, turning what felt like a sterile facility into a tranquil retreat.

"To have this and know people cared enough to do this for them, every time that happens, it helps them feel a little bit better about themselves," said Wright.

"This is going to mean a lot to them. It gives them a sense of beauty, a sense of hope, a place to kind of reflect on where they're going to head to in their future," said Renee Cooper, with the Valley Crisis Center.

Meadows wants to thank the other companies that helped make his makeover possible -- Paint It Green Painting Company, Graple Home Decor, Interior Elements, I.C. Movers, Bruce Murphy and the Smack Group.
